Where to stay in Aswan: four kinds of base

Aswan has a city bank, islands in the river and a west bank across the water. Where you sleep decides how you move: on foot along the riverfront, by boat to an island, or not at all if the ship is your bed. This page compares the locations, not individual hotels, because the useful question is how a place connects to the river and to the sights.

If you are travelling by ship, the stay is part of the trip. Read our guide to the Nile cruise first, then use this page for the nights before and after. A full cruise programme is explained day by day.

For most visitors who stay on land, the Corniche is the simplest base because it is on the city bank and needs no boat transfer. Choose an island or the west bank when the transfer and the last boat are clear. If you want the river to be the holiday, choose a ship.

The bases in more detail

Notes on each type.

The Corniche

The Corniche is the riverfront promenade of the city. A hotel here is an urban stay beside the water. Do not assume a Nile view: the view depends on the room category you book, so look for a river view in the room description.

The islands

Elephantine Island and the Plant Island lie in the river, separate from the city bank. The Plant Island is also called Kitchener's Island, and a botanical garden is on it. A stay on an island means crossing water. Check where the boat lands, whether the transfer is included and when the last boat runs.

The west bank

The west bank has Qubbet el-Hawa and the St Simeon monastery. It lies across the river from the city, so you again depend on a crossing. For the Nubian villages and where to sleep there, see where to stay near the Nubian villages.

A ship as your hotel

A cruise ship is not in motion every night. One cruise programme includes nights in Aswan or Luxor as well as nights underway. If the ship is moored in Aswan, it is your base for the sights of the city.

A dahabiya

A dahabiya is a small sailing boat for a few guests, typically with 4 cabins and 1 or 2 suites. It has two masts and no engine of its own, and a tow boat helps when the wind is poor. One programme ends with a final night at the dock next to the Aswan bridge.

Nights before and after

Some packages leave out hotel nights before and after the cruise. If you arrive the day before embarkation or leave after disembarkation, add a night or two on land.

Nile view or Nile cabin?

A Nile view is not the same as a balcony or a window that opens. Some ships have cabins at water level with closed portholes and higher suites with panoramic windows. When a cabin says river view, ask what that means in practice: window size, deck level and whether the window opens.

For a ship, the deck matters as much as the cabin category. Lower decks are closer to the water, and higher decks give more outlook. Ask for the deck plan before you pay.

Staying in Luxor first?

Most cruises start there.

Many Nile cruises begin in Luxor, with embarkation on the east bank. For the choice between the two banks, read where to stay in Luxor. If your main interest is the royal tombs, see also where to stay for the Valley of the Kings.

Where to stay in Aswan: frequently asked questions

Where is the best area to stay in Aswan?

For most visitors on land, the Corniche is the simplest base, as it is on the city bank and needs no boat transfer. Islands and the west bank suit those who accept a crossing.

Will a Corniche hotel have a Nile view?

Not automatically. The view depends on the room category, so check that the room is described as a river view.

Do I need a boat to reach an island hotel?

Yes, the islands lie in the river. Check the landing place, whether the transfer is included and when the last boat runs.

Is a Nile cruise ship a good place to stay in Aswan?

It can be, if the ship is moored in Aswan on the nights you need. A ship is not underway every night, so look at the programme to see which nights are in port.

Are hotel nights before and after a cruise included?

Not always. Some packages leave them out, so read the inclusions and add nights if you need them.

Is the-nile.org an official or booking site?

No. This is an independent travel guide with no connection to hotels, ship operators, the tourism authorities or tour companies.
