What a dahabiya Nile cruise is

A dahabiya is a traditional two-masted sailing boat. It has no engine of its own and carries only a handful of cabins, so a dahabiya Nile cruise feels very different from a hotel ship with a sun deck and a restaurant. The usual route runs between Esna and Aswan, with temple stops on the way.

A typical dahabiya has 4 cabins plus 1 or 2 suites, each for up to 2 guests and each with a private bathroom. The sails do the work when the wind is right. When it is not, a tow boat helps, so do not expect silent sailing for the whole trip. The prices below are examples for 2026. Rates differ by boat and season, so check before you book.

Dahabiya routes and nights

Three programmes, all between Esna and Aswan.

4 nights, Esna to Aswan

A 4-night programme. You board at Esna, not in the centre of Luxor, and sail upstream towards Aswan.

3 nights, Aswan to Esna

The same stretch in the other direction, one night shorter. Check which direction your dates fall in before you compare prices.

5 nights, 6 days

Another programme goes from Esna to El Kab and Edfu, then a full day on the river, Gebel Silsileh and Kom Ombo, with disembarkation near Aswan. On this programme the last night is spent at the dock next to the Aswan bridge.

For Luxor itself, including Karnak and the west bank, see the Luxor Nile cruise guide. The temples at Edfu and Kom Ombo have their own pages.

For most travellers who want a set programme, Luxor as the starting point and a wider choice of dates, a hotel ship is the easier fit. Choose a dahabiya if you want a small group, a slow river and can accept boarding at Esna. The route and stops of the classic trip are on the Luxor to Aswan page.

Before you book

Practical points for a small sailing boat.

Sailing depends on the weather

No operator can promise a fixed share of sailing. Ask how often the tow boat is used and how that affects the stops.

Skip the swim stops

Some programmes advertise swimming. The German Foreign Office advises against bathing in fresh water in Egypt because of schistosomiasis, a parasitic disease. Stay on board or on the bank.

Safety on the river

The UK Foreign Office notes Nile boat accidents caused by overcrowding and weak safety standards (advice updated August 2026). Ask about life jackets and the safety briefing before departure.

Heat and timing

Climate averages show November to March as clearly cooler than June to August. October and April already reach about 35 °C by day. Operating months differ by operator, so ask for the current dates. See best time for a Nile cruise and Nile weather.

Dahabiya Nile cruise: frequently asked questions

What is a dahabiya?

A dahabiya is a traditional Nile sailing boat with two masts. Modern versions used for cruises have a few cabins, a dining area and a deck. The boat has no engine of its own, and a tow boat helps when the wind is not suitable.

How much does a dahabiya cruise cost?

In 2026, a typical rate is EUR 330 per person and night in a double cabin and EUR 415 in a suite. That makes EUR 1,320 for the 4-night cabin trip and EUR 990 for the 3-night trip. Rates differ by boat and date, so check before you book.

Where does a dahabiya cruise start?

The routes start at Esna or Aswan. Transfers from Luxor or Aswan to the boat are part of the rate on some boats but not on others, so check before you book.

Does the boat sail the whole way?

Not always. Sailing depends on the wind, and a tow boat helps when the wind is not suitable. Treat a dahabiya as a slow trip, not a silent one.

Can I swim from the boat?

It is better not to. The German Foreign Office advises against swimming in fresh water in Egypt because of the risk of schistosomiasis, even if a programme includes a swim stop.

Is the-nile.org run by a dahabiya operator?

No. This is an independent guide with no connection to boat operators, travel agencies, authorities or museums.
