The best time for a Nile cruise
The best time for a Nile cruise depends on how you handle heat. Between Luxor and Aswan the sun shines almost every day of the year, so the question is not rain but temperature. The cooler months from November to March are much easier for walking around temples than June to August. October and April already average about 35 °C in the daytime.
This is a weighing of climate, price examples and ship calendars, not an official season. If you want the numbers first, open the monthly weather tables for Luxor and Aswan. If you are ready to look at routes, see our Luxor to Aswan Nile cruise guide.

Nile cruise season compared
Average daytime highs, 1981 to 2010, for Luxor and Aswan.
| Period | Average highs | What it means | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| November to March | 22.9–29.5 °C | Mild days. Cool mornings and evenings, and January nights near 6 °C in Luxor | Most first-time cruisers |
| October and April | 35.2–35.7 °C | Hot, but not extreme. Early starts help | Travellers who handle heat and start early |
| May and September | 39.0–39.5 °C | Very hot by midday | Short sightseeing sessions only |
| June to August | 41.0–41.4 °C | Hottest months, warm nights | Those who accept heat for the sake of a summer trip |
For most travellers, November to March is the best choice. If you can only go in October or April, plan temple visits for the early morning.

Nile cruise prices by season
Treat these as examples, not a rule.
A dated example
A luxury cabin in double occupancy on a 4-night cruise costs $4,960 per adult from 4 November to 21 December 2026 and $6,230 from 22 December 2026 to 4 January 2027. The rate includes full board, excursions in small groups and airport transfers. Drinks, tips, personal expenses and optional excursions are extra.
Winter can cost more
Rates for a double cabin can be higher in the winter half-year than in summer. That does not mean a fixed saving in the hot months. Compare rates for your exact dates and cabin type.
Check what is included
Full board is not the same as all inclusive, and a package does not always include every guide, entry or tomb. Tips are customary and usually paid separately. Read the inclusions before you compare totals.
Nile cruise prices and inclusions →Ship calendars and sailing times
The operating season depends on the ship and the operator. One long Cairo to Aswan itinerary for 2026 sails in spring and autumn and not in June, July or August. That is one ship's calendar. It does not mean the river is closed in summer.
Lake Nasser trips are a separate product with their own dates, so check the current departures for the ship you want. Dahabiyas sail between Esna and Aswan, and their sailing depends on the wind. Read the dahabiya guide and the Lake Nasser cruise page for details.

Timing your sightseeing
Opening hours matter more in hot months.
Edfu
Open until 5 p.m. daily. It opens at 6 a.m. on Sunday and Wednesday and at 7 a.m. on other days.
Edfu guide →Kom Ombo
Temple and museum are open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., with the last entry at 8 p.m. The evening hours help in summer.
Kom Ombo guide →Philae and the Unfinished Obelisk
Both open at 7 a.m. and close at 4 p.m., with the last entry at 3 p.m.
Aswan guide →Abu Simbel
The days around the sun alignment, 22 February and 22 October, have a separate ticket category. Abu Simbel is a day trip or part of a Lake Nasser cruise, not a stop on the Luxor to Aswan route.
Valley of the Kings
Hot-season visits are a matter of opening hours and the heat in the valley. See the best time to visit the Valley of the Kings and the Luxor weather page.
Swimming
The German Federal Foreign Office advises against swimming in fresh water in Egypt because of schistosomiasis. A hot day is not a reason to jump in the river.
